Chapter on Women Forbidden in Marriage
Mothers are forbidden in marriage: any woman who bore you, or who bore the one who bore you, counts as your mother.
Daughters are likewise forbidden: any woman whom you begot, or who was begotten by someone you begot, is your daughter.
I add: a girl conceived through a man’s own fornication remains lawful for him, whereas a woman is forbidden to marry the child she conceived through fornication. Allah knows best.
Also forbidden are sisters, nieces on both the brother’s and the sister’s side, paternal aunts, and maternal aunts. Anyone who is the sister of a male who bore you is your paternal aunt, and anyone who is the sister of a female who bore you is your maternal aunt.
These seven categories are likewise prohibited through milk-kinship. Every woman who nursed you, who nursed your wet-nurse, who nursed your child, who gave birth to your wet-nurse, or whose milk was used for you, becomes a foster-mother; apply the same reasoning to the remaining categories.
Not prohibited to you is the woman who nursed only your brother, nor the woman who suckled you outside the nursing age, nor the mother or daughter of the woman who nursed your child. Likewise, the sister of your brother—whether the brother is related through lineage or milk-kinship—who is connected to him through one parent only and not to you, remains lawful to you.
Forbidden, however, is the wife of anyone who begot you or anyone you begot, whether the relationship is by blood or milk-kinship; also forbidden is the mother of your wife in either case, as are her daughters—provided you have consummated the marriage with their mother.
