Innovations connected with Jerusalem:
– Intending to combine the pilgrimage with a visit to Jerusalem and telling the pilgrim, “May God sanctify your ḥajj.”
– Circumambulating the Dome of the Rock in imitation of the circumambulation of the Kaʿbah.
– Exalting the Rock in any manner—rubbing against it, kissing it, driving sheep to it for sacrifice, performing the taʿrīf there on the afternoon of ʿArafah, erecting structures upon it, and the like.
– Claiming that the Rock bears the imprint of the Prophet’s foot or of his turban, while some even allege that it is the footprint of the Lord Himself, exalted is He.
– Visiting the spot that people say was the cradle of Jesus, peace be upon him.
– Asserting that there, too, are the Bridge (al-ṣirāṭ) and the Balance (al-mīzān), and that the barrier said to be set up between Paradise and Hell is the wall built to the east of the mosque.
– Venerating the so-called Chain or the spot where it once hung.
– Performing prayer at the tomb of Abraham the Intimate Friend, peace be upon him.
