Innovations in the stoning rites
- Taking a ritual bath exclusively for the casting of the jamarāt.
- Washing the pebbles before throwing them.
- Replacing the prescribed takbīr (“Allāhu akbar”) with tasbīḥ (“Subḥān Allāh”) or any other form of remembrance.
- Adding to the takbīr such words as: “In spite of Satan and his followers. O Allah, grant that my pilgrimage be accepted, my effort appreciated, and my sin forgiven. O Allah, [I perform this] in faith in Your Book and in following the Sunnah of Your Prophet.”
- The view of some later writers who say: “It is recommended to say with every pebble: ‘In the name of Allah; Allah is greatest; Allah has fulfilled His promise …’ up to His words, ‘even though the disbelievers dislike it.’”
- Binding oneself to particular throwing techniques—for instance, one says: place the tip of the right thumb on the middle of the index finger, set the pebble on the back of the thumb as though forming the number seventy, then cast it; another says: curl the index finger and rest it on the joint of the thumb as though forming the number ten.
- Stipulating that the thrower must stand no less than five cubits from the target.
- Casting the jamarāt with sandals or other objects.
