Innovations concerning the Sa’y between al-Safa and al-Marwah:
- Performing ablution solely for walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah on the belief that for every footstep one will be granted seventy thousand ranks.
- Climbing al-Safa until one presses against the wall.
- Saying, while descending from al-Safa: “O Allah, employ me in the Sunnah of Your Prophet, cause me to die upon his creed, and protect me—by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful—from the misleading trials.”
- Reciting during the Sa’y: “Lord, forgive, have mercy, and overlook what You know; indeed, You are the Most Majestic, the Most Generous. O Allah, make it an accepted Hajj or an accepted ‘umrah and a forgiven sin. Allah is greatest,” three times, and so on.1
- Performing fourteen circuits of Sa’y, ending on al-Safa.
- Repeating the Sa’y within the same Hajj or ‘umrah.
- Performing two units of prayer after completing the Sa’y.
- Continuing the Sa’y between al-Safa and al-Marwah even after the congregational prayer has been called, thereby missing the prayer in congregation.
- Adhering to a specific supplication upon arriving at Mina, such as the one in the Ihya’: “O Allah, this is Mina, so bestow upon me what You have bestowed upon Your friends and the people of Your obedience”; and upon leaving it: “O Allah, make this the best morning I have ever set out,” and so on
