There is no objection to engaging in debate in the manner that is best when the need arises, for the disputation that is forbidden during ḥajj is only the false disputation that is likewise forbidden outside ḥajj—just as immorality is prohibited both during the pilgrimage and at other times. It is, therefore, entirely different from the debate that is enjoined in the verse: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good preaching, and argue with them in the kindest way” (16:125).
Nevertheless, the caller to Allah should bear in mind that if it becomes clear there is no benefit in debating with an opponent because of the latter’s fanatic adherence to his school or opinion, and that persisting in the argument may lead to something impermissible, then it is better to leave off the debate. This follows the Prophet’s saying: “I guarantee a house on the outskirts of Paradise for the one who abandons disputation even when he is in the right…” the ḥadīth.¹
