and you must likewise spend the night in Muzdalifah until you have prayed the dawn prayer. Should you miss the overnight stay, do not forfeit offering that prayer there, for it is obligatory—indeed, according to the stronger view held by the verifying scholars, it is one of the very pillars of ḥajj. This concession applies only to women and to the physically weak, for they may depart after midnight, as will be discussed.
Fourth: Avoid, as far as you can, passing in front of anyone who is praying in the Sacred Mosque—let alone in other mosques or elsewhere—for the Prophet ﷺ said:
“If the person who walks in front of a worshipper knew the burden he incurs, he would stand still for forty rather than pass before him.”
This wording is unrestricted; it embraces every passer-by and every worshipper. No authentic report exempts those who pass in the Sacred Mosque. Accordingly, when you pray there you must set up a sutrah (a prayer screen) just as you would in any other place, for the relevant hadiths are general in scope. There are, to be sure, a few particular reports from certain Companions; these are cited in the parent work.
Fifth: It is incumbent upon people of knowledge and virtue to teach the pilgrims—wherever they meet them—the rites and legal rulings of ḥajj in accordance with the Book and the Sunnah. Yet they must not allow this to distract them from calling to tawḥīd, the bedrock of Islam for which the messengers were sent and the scriptures revealed. Most of those we have encountered, even some who lay claim to knowledge, are sorely ignorant of the true meaning of Allah’s oneness and His attributes. They are likewise heedless of the pressing need for Muslims, despite their diverse schools and numerous factions, to unite their ranks and their word upon the foundations of the Book and the Sunnah in creed, rulings, transactions, morals, politics, economics, and every other sphere of life. Let them remember that any voice raised, or any reform movement launched, on a basis other than this sound foundation and straight path will yield the Muslims nothing but division, weakness, humiliation, and disgrace—and present realities are the clearest proof of that. Allah alone is the One whose help is sought.
