Slaughtering and Sacrifice
95- He then proceeds to the place of sacrifice in Minā and slaughters his offering; this is the Sunnah.
96- Nevertheless, he may lawfully sacrifice in any other part of Minā, and even in Mecca, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I have sacrificed here, yet all of Minā is a place of sacrifice and every pathway of Mecca is roadway and place of sacrifice, so offer your sacrifices in your dwellings.”¹
97- The Sunnah is for him to slaughter or pierce the animal with his own hand if he is able; otherwise he may appoint someone to do it on his behalf.
98- He should slaughter it while facing the qiblah, positioning the animal on its side².
(1) I note that this ruling gives pilgrims broader latitude and removes most of the congestion problem caused by the accumulation of sacrificial animals at the slaughter site, which had previously forced the authorities there to bury many of them. For further detail, consult the original work, pp. 87–88.
(2) On this question there is a marfu hadith from Jabir recorded by Abu Dawud and others, cited in Irwa al-Ghalil, no. 1138, and another narration in al-Bayhaqi, 9:285. It is also reported that Ibn Umar considered it commendable to face the qibla while slaughtering, and Abd al-Razzaq (no. 8585) transmits with an authentic chain that he disliked eating meat from an animal slaughtered while not facing the qibla.
