of performing the tamattuʿ form of Hajj, for the Prophet ﷺ instructed his Companions to do so in his final directive and grew angry with those who were slow to obey his command to change their Hajj into an ʿumrah. He also said:
“ʿUmrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.”
When some Companions asked him, “Messenger of Allah, is this concession of ours for this year alone, or forever?” he interlaced his fingers and replied,
“ʿUmrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection—no, rather forever and ever; no, rather forever and ever.” 1
Because of this, he ordered Lady Fāṭimah and all of his wives—may Allah be pleased with them—to come out of ihrām after completing their ʿumrah; and for the same reason Ibn ʿAbbās used to say:
“Whoever has circumambulated the House has left the state of ihrām; this is the practice of your Prophet, even if you dislike it.” 2
Therefore, anyone who has not brought a sacrificial animal should pronounce the talbiyah for ʿumrah during the three months of Hajj. Whoever has already entered ihrām for Hajj alone or for qirān and then learns of the Prophet’s order to change should hasten to comply, even after arriving in Mecca and performing the saʿy between Safā and Marwah: he should exit ihrām, then enter ihrām anew for Hajj on the Day of Tarwiyah, the eighth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Allah the Exalted says, “O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.” 3
Third: Beware of neglecting to spend the night in Minā on the eve of ʿArafah, for it is obligatory. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did so himself and instructed the ummah, saying:
“Learn your rites from me …”
