Standing in ʿArafah
– He then proceeds to ʿArafah and, if possible, stands by the rocks at the foot of Jabal al-Raḥmah; if that is not feasible, the entire plain of ʿArafah is a valid place of standing.
– He stands facing the qiblah, raises his hands, and engages in supplication while continuing the talbiyah.
– He should frequently repeat the tahlīl, for it is the best supplication on the Day of ʿArafah. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most excellent words I and the prophets before me have ever spoken on the afternoon of ʿArafah are: ‘There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him is all praise, and He has power over all things.’”²
– If he occasionally adds to the talbiyah the phrase “Indeed, goodness is the goodness of the Hereafter,” that is also permitted.³
– The sunnah for someone standing in ʿArafah is not to fast on this day.
– He continues in this state—remembering Allah, proclaiming the talbiyah, and making whatever supplications he wishes—hoping that Allah the Exalted will include him among those He frees from the Fire, those about whom He boasts to the angels, as in the ḥadith: “There is no day on which Allah frees more servants from the Fire than the Day of ʿArafah. He draws near, then boasts of them to the angels, saying, ‘What do these people want?’”⁴ In another report: “Allah boasts to the inhabitants of heaven about the people of ʿArafah, saying, ‘Look at My servants; they have come to Me dishevelled and dust-covered.’”⁵ He remains so until the sun sets.
