Then he walks upward until he reaches Marwah, ascends it, and does there what he had done at Safa: facing the Kaʿbah, proclaiming Allah’s greatness and oneness, and making supplication.1 This counts as one circuit.
52 – He then returns and climbs Safa again, walking where walking is legislated and running where running is legislated; this is the second circuit.
53 – Next he goes back to Marwah, and so he continues until he has completed seven circuits, the seventh and final one ending at Marwah.
"Benefit." Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudama al-Maqdisi, 3/394, states:
“Women must walk throughout both the tawaf (circumambulation) and the sa‘i (going between Safa and Marwah). Ibn al-Mundhir said: The scholars unanimously agree that women neither perform ramal (the energetic trot) around the Kaaba nor between Safa and Marwah, nor do they practice idtiba‘ (exposing the right shoulder), because the purpose of those two rites is to display vigor, whereas for women the aim is concealment; ramal and idtiba‘ risk exposing the body.”
Al-Majmu‘ by al-Nawawi, 8/75, indicates that the question is disputed within the Shafi‘i school. He writes that there are two opinions:
1. The first—and it is the sound view endorsed by the majority—is that a woman does not run at all; she walks the whole distance, day or night.
2. The second is that if she performs sa‘i at night when the passage is empty, it is recommended for her to run in the marked section just as a man does.
I say: The second view appears closer to the intent of the rite, for the very origin of sa‘i is the running of Hajar, the mother of Isma‘il, seeking help for her thirsty son, as in the hadith of Ibn Abbas: “She found Safa the nearest hill, so she climbed it and looked toward the valley to see whether she could spot anyone, but saw no one. She came down from Safa, and when she reached the valley she lifted the edge of her robe and ran with all her strength until she crossed the valley, then she reached Marwah, climbed it, and again looked for someone but saw no one. She did this seven times.” Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet said, “That is why people perform sa‘i between them.” Reported by al-Bukhari in the Book of the Prophets.
(1) As for actually seeing the Kaaba from al-Safa today, it is no longer possible because the intervening buildings block the view, as mentioned earlier. One should therefore strive to face its direction and not imitate the bewildered who raise their eyes and hands to the sky!
