– He repeats this at the beginning of every circuit.
– He must not push or jostle others, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O ʿUmar, you are a strong man; do not harm the weak. When the way to the Stone is clear for you, touch it; otherwise, face it and say the takbīr (‘Allāhu akbar’).” ⦗1⦘
– Touching the Stone possesses great merit, because the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah will raise up the Stone on the Day of Resurrection; it will have two eyes with which it sees and a tongue that speaks, bearing witness for all who touched it in truth.” He also said: “Wiping the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner wipes away sins completely.” ⦗2⦘ And he said: “The Black Stone is from Paradise; it was whiter than snow until the sins of the idol-worshippers turned it black.” ⦗3⦘
– He then begins the circumambulation of the Kaʿba, keeping it on his left and going outside the semi-circular wall (al-Ḥijr) for seven rounds; from the Stone back to the Stone counts as one circuit. He performs iḍṭibāʿ ⦗4⦘ (placing the upper garment beneath the right arm and exposing the shoulder) throughout, and in the first three circuits he walks briskly (raml) from the Stone back to the Stone, walking normally in the remaining ones.
– In every circuit he touches the Yemeni Corner with his hand but does not kiss it; if he cannot reach it, no hand gesture toward it is prescribed.
