Stipulation (ishtirāṭ):
-
If the pilgrim so wishes, he may accompany his talbiyah with a stipulation to his Lord, fearing some unforeseen obstacle such as illness or danger. He says, as the Prophet ﷺ taught: “Allāhumma maḥillī ḥaythu ḥabashtanī” 2 (“O Allah, my place of release is wherever You restrain me”). Should such an impediment or sickness befall him after making this stipulation, he may leave the state of Hajj or ʿUmrah without having to offer a compensatory sacrifice. He may perform the pilgrimage in a later year—unless the pilgrimage in question was his obligatory Hajj of Islam, in which case he must make it up.
-
There is a special prayer for entering the state of ihram. However, if the time for an obligatory prayer arrives before he has entered ihram, and he performs that prayer and then declares his ihram immediately afterward, he will be following the example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who entered ihram after the Ẓuhr prayer.
