His ﷺ directive to perform tamattuʿ:
- When a pilgrim is about to enter the state of ihram, then:
• If he is a qārin (combining Hajj and ʿUmrah in one ihram) and has already brought along his sacrificial animal, he says: “Labbayka Allāhumma ḥajjan wa ʿumratan” (“At Your service, O Allah, for Hajj and ʿUmrah”).
• If he has not brought the sacrificial animal—and this is the preferable course—he must pronounce the talbiyah for ʿUmrah alone, saying: “Labbayka Allāhumma ʿumratan” (“At Your service, O Allah, for an ʿUmrah”).
Should he have made the talbiyah for Hajj only, he is to revoke it and convert it into an ʿUmrah, following the Prophet’s ﷺ instruction and his words:
“ʿUmrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection,” whereupon he ﷺ interlaced his fingers. He also said:
“O family of Muhammad, whoever among you performs Hajj, let him begin with an ʿUmrah within his Hajj.” 1
This is what is meant by tamattuʿ—performing an ʿUmrah first, followed by the Hajj.
