The people best versed in the campaigns are, first, the people of Medina, then those of greater Syria, and after them the people of Iraq. The Medinans know the campaigns best because the events themselves unfolded in their midst, while the Syrians were a nation of conquest and battle, and thus acquired a breadth of knowledge about jihad and the Prophet’s military history unmatched by others. For this reason scholars greatly valued the book that Abu Ishaq al-Fazari composed on the subject, and they deemed al-Awzaʿi more knowledgeable in this area than the scholars of any other region.
