namely the brothers who share both parents or share only the father. The coincidence of a grandfather and such brothers inheriting together is rare; in fact, it did not arise in Islam until after the death of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him. Differences of opinion may occur because the proof is obscure or slips from one’s attention, because one has never heard it, because of a mistake in understanding the text, or because one believes there is a weightier opposing consideration. My purpose here is merely to set out the broad contours of the issue, not its particulars.
