His son, Shaykh ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad, summed up these allegations and answered them, saying:
“As for the lies spread about us—concealing the truth and misleading the people—that we interpret the Quran by our own opinions, that we select from the hadith only what suits our understanding without consulting any commentary or relying on a teacher;
that we diminish the rank of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by claiming, ‘The Prophet is but decayed bones in his grave and the staff of one of us is more useful than he; he has no power of intercession and visiting him is not recommended’;
that he did not know the meaning of lā ilāha illā Allāh (there is no god but Allah) until the verse, ‘So know that there is no god but Allah’ (47:19)1—despite the verse being revealed in Madinah—came down to him;
that we do not rely on the statements of the scholars and that we destroy the writings of the juristic schools because they contain both truth and falsehood;
that we are anthropomorphists;
that we make a blanket declaration of unbelief against all people of our time—and against everyone after the sixth century—except those who follow what we are upon;
that, as a consequence, we do not accept anyone’s pledge of allegiance until he first admits that he had been a polytheist and that his parents died associating partners with Allah;
that we forbid sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ;
that we categorically prohibit the lawful visitation of graves;
that whoever adopts our doctrine is absolved of all liabilities, even debts;
that we deny any right of the Prophet’s Household—may Allah be pleased with them;
that we coerce them to marry those who are not their equals;
and that we compel some elderly men, when they bring their case to us, to divorce their young wives so that those wives may marry younger men…
All such claims are fabrications and slanders.”}
