- As for the charge that the Shaykh makes blanket declarations of unbelief and wages war against Muslims, he replied: “With respect to takfīr, we only declare a person an unbeliever when he has understood the religion of the Messenger, then—after knowing it—reviles it, forbids it, and shows enmity toward those who practise it. Such a one alone I deem a disbeliever, while the vast majority of the ummah, praise be to Allah, are not like that. As for fighting, we have never fought anyone up to this day except in defence of life and honour. They were the ones who came against us in our own land and left us no means of escape. We may, however, meet some of them in retaliation, repaying an evil with its like, and we likewise fight anyone who openly reviles the religion of the Messenger after having come to know it. We make it clear to you that this is the incontestable truth, and that it must be spread among the people and taught to both men and women.1” End.
He also said, after proving the futility of what the grave-worshippers do: “This alone is what created disagreement between us and the people, until they went so far as to declare us unbelievers, fight us, and deem our blood and property lawful—until Allah granted us victory over them and we prevailed. It is to this very matter that we call the people, and it is for this that we fight them, but only after establishing the proof against them from the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger, and the consensus of the righteous predecessors among the imams, acting upon His words: ‘Fight them until there is no persecution and all religion is for Allah alone.’2 Whoever does not respond to the call through proof and clarification, we fight with sword and spear, as the Exalted says: ‘We certainly sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance so that people may uphold justice; and We sent down iron, wherein is severe might and benefits for mankind, so that Allah may know who truly helps Him and His messengers though unseen. Surely Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.’3” End.4
