It is a comprehensive supplication encompassing every avenue to goodness and happiness in this world and the Hereafter.
The words, “O Allah, apportion to us such fear of You as will keep us from disobeying You,” mean: Grant us a share and portion of the fear of You—which is fear coupled with veneration of Allah and knowledge of Him, Glorified is He—that will serve as a barrier preventing us from falling into acts of disobedience, sins, and misdeeds. This indicates that fear of Allah is the greatest deterrent and barrier preventing a person from falling into sin. Allah says, “Only those of His servants who have knowledge fear Allah.” 1 The more a servant’s knowledge of Allah increases, the greater his fear of Allah, his devotion to obeying Him, and his distance from disobedience to Him.
The words, “such obedience to You as will bring us to Your Paradise,” mean: Make easy for me such obedience to You as will be a means of attaining Your pleasure and reaching the Paradise You have prepared for Your righteous servants.
The words, “And such certainty as will make the calamities of this world easier for us,” mean: Apportion to us such certainty—the fullness and perfection of knowledge—that all command belongs to Allah, before and after; that He, Glorified is He, directs the affairs of His creation as He wills and decrees concerning them whatever He wishes. Let this certainty be a means of easing the calamities and adversities that may befall a person in this life. The stronger a person’s certainty, the more it enables him to remain patient through affliction, for one who possesses certainty knows that everything that befalls him comes only from Allah, and so he is content and submits.
The words, “Let us enjoy our hearing, our sight, and our strength for as long as You keep us alive,” contain a request that Allah preserve the supplicant’s hearing, sight, and all his other faculties so that he may benefit from them throughout his life.
The words, “and cause this enjoyment to endure until we die,” mean: Keep this enjoyment of the senses and faculties lasting and uninterrupted by preserving them in sound health until I die.
