al-Bukhārī and Muslim from Abū Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “When you hear roosters crow, ask Allah of His bounty, for they have seen an angel; and when you hear a donkey bray, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, for it has seen a devil.”1.
Ahmad and Abū Dāwūd also narrated from Jābir ibn Abd Allāh—may Allah be pleased with them both—who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “When you hear dogs barking and donkeys braying at night, seek refuge in Allah, for they see what you do not see.”2.
It is also from the Sunnah for a Muslim, upon entering the marketplace, to say: “There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is the Ever-Living, who never dies. All good is in His hand, and He has power over all things.” Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Whoever enters the marketplace and says, ‘There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is the Ever-Living, who never dies. All good is in His hand, and He has power over all things,’ Allah will record one million good deeds for him, erase one million bad deeds from him, and raise him by one million ranks.”3.
We ask Allah to help us all to do every good and to guide us all to the straight path.
