Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

O Allah, Abraham is Your servant, intimate friend, and prophet; I am Your servant and prophet. He prayed to You for Mecca, and I pray to You for Medina for the like of what he prayed to You for Mecca, and as much again.’ He added that the Prophet would then call the youngest child present and give him that fruit.”1.

It is also from the Sunnah, when a person possesses something that he fears may be harmed by the evil eye, to remember Allah, supplicate, and seek refuge in Him.

Allah Most High says: “If only, when you entered your garden, you had said, ‘Whatever Allah wills! There is no power except through Allah.’”2.

Sahl ibn Hunayf reported that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “When one of you sees something he admires in himself or his property, let him invoke Allah’s blessing upon it, for the evil eye is real.” Ahmad narrated it3.

Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—used to seek refuge from the jinn and the evil eye of human beings until the two surahs of refuge were revealed. When they were revealed, he adopted them and left everything else.” Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah narrated it4.

This hadith demonstrates the immense importance of these two surahs, their tremendous benefit, and the great—indeed indispensable—need for them. No one can dispense with them, and they have a particular effect in warding off the jinn, magic, the evil eye, and all other evils. These two surahs encompass seeking refuge from all these evils in language that is most concise and comprehensive, and most clearly expressive of
