It is also recommended that when a Muslim sees his companion wearing a new garment, he say, “May you live to wear it out, and may Allah Most High replace it for you.” Abū Dāwūd narrated that Abū Nadra said: “When one of the Prophet’s Companions—peace and blessings be upon him—put on a new garment, he would be told, ‘May you live to wear it out, and may Allah Most High replace it for you.’”1.
A similar report has also been narrated from Umm Khālid bint Khālid ibn Sa‘īd ibn al-‘Ās—may Allah be pleased with her—and traced back to the Prophet. Al-Bukhārī narrated it in his Sahīh.2.
Their words, “May you live to wear it out, and may Allah replace it for you,” are a supplication that Allah preserve the wearer until the garment wears out and then replace it with something better.
It is also from the Sunnah for a Muslim to say to someone who has done him a kindness, “May Allah reward you with goodness.” This is a magnificent supplication and the highest expression of praise. Al-Tirmidhī narrated from Usāma ibn Zayd—may Allah be pleased with them both—that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “If someone is shown a kindness and says to the one who did it, ‘May Allah reward you with goodness,’ he has praised him to the fullest.”3.
It was also part of the Prophet’s guidance—peace and blessings be upon him—to pray for blessings upon seeing the season’s first fruit. Muslim narrated in his Sahīh from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—that he said: “Whenever people saw the first ripe fruit, they would bring it to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him. When the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—took it, he would say, ‘O Allah, bless our fruit for us; bless our city for us; bless our sāʿ for us; and bless our mudd for us,
