of faith, righteousness, uprightness, cooperation in goodness, and the like. “The good within it” means the good among its people, dwellings, food, and other things.
The words, “And we seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its inhabitants, and the evil within it,” contain an appeal for refuge in Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—from every evil and source of harm, whether in the settlement itself, its inhabitants, or anything it contains.
This is thus a comprehensive supplication asking Allah for good and seeking His protection from evil, after appealing to Him—Glorified is He—by His lordship over all things.
Furthermore, while traveling, it is recommended that the traveler frequently supplicate for himself, his parents, his family, his children, and all Muslims. He should choose the most comprehensive supplications and persistently beseech Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—for the supplication of a traveler is answered.
In al-Bayhaqī’s al-Sunan al-Kubrā, Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) related a hadith traced back to the Prophet: “Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of a parent, the supplication of a fasting person, and the supplication of a traveler.”1.
Al-Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Three supplications are undoubtedly answered: the supplication of one who has been wronged, the supplication of a traveler, and the supplication of a parent for his child.”2.
This said, I ask Allah to enable us all to obey Him and to help us remember Him, thank Him, and worship Him well, whether traveling or at home and in all our affairs. He is indeed All-Hearing and Responsive.
