sins but You.’ He then laughed. He was asked, ‘O Commander of the Faithful, what made you laugh?’ He replied, ‘I saw the Prophet—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—do as I have done, and then he laughed. I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what made you laugh?” He replied, “Indeed, your Lord marvels at His servant when he says, ‘Forgive me my sins,’ for he knows that none forgives sins but Me.”’”1.

The Muslim should reflect on this and on what it demonstrates of the perfection of Allah’s grace, the vastness of His forgiveness, and the fullness of His benevolence and kindness, even though He has absolutely no need for His servants’ repentance or pleas for forgiveness.

In Sahīh Muslim, it is related from Abdullāh ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—“When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—had settled upon his camel to set out on a journey, he said, ‘Allah is the Greatest,’ three times and then said: ‘Glory be to the One who subjected this to us, though we could never have subdued it, and surely to our Lord we shall return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion during travel and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a distressing sight, and an evil turn of affairs concerning my wealth and family.’ When he returned, he would say these same words and add: ‘We return, repent, worship, and praise our Lord.’”2.

Regarding his words, “O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety,” the term “righteousness” means performing
