167 / WORDS OF REMEMBRANCE UPON MOUNTING A RIDING ANIMAL AND DURING TRAVEL
Allah Most High says:
“And He is the One who created all pairs and made for you ships and livestock that you may ride, so that you may settle upon their backs, then remember your Lord’s favor once you are seated upon them and say: ‘Glory be to the One who subjected this to us, though we could never have subdued it, and surely to our Lord we shall return.’” 1.
Allah, Glorious is He, has made clear that all means of transportation—ships and livestock, as well as the modern forms of transport He has subjected to people in our time, some traveling over land, some flying through the air, and others sailing the seas—and people’s settling upon their backs, becoming securely seated on them, and traveling by them from place to place in comfort and tranquility are all manifestations of Allah’s kindness, subjection, generosity, and favor. How, then, could it be fitting for someone who rides them to neglect remembering the One who bestowed them and graciously provided them, and to fail to praise Him as He deserves?
The guidance of the Prophet—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—when mounting a riding animal and during travel was the most perfect and complete guidance. How could it be otherwise, when he was the most perfect of people in obedience, the finest in worship, and the most admirable and purest in conduct? What follows presents some of his guidance—Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—in this regard.
Al-Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd, and others relate from Ali ibn Rabīah, who said: “I witnessed Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—when a riding animal was brought for him to mount. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said, ‘In the name of Allah.’ Once he had settled upon its back, he said, ‘Praise be to Allah.’ He then said, ‘Glory be to the One who subjected this to us, though we could never have subdued it.’ He then said, ‘Praise be to Allah,’ three times, followed by, ‘Allah is the Greatest,’ three times. He then said, ‘Glory be to You! I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for no one forgives
