Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, as a mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain in faith. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him. He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.” 1.

And He, Glorious is He, says: “Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree. And what will make you realize what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. On that night the angels and the Spirit descend, by their Lord’s permission, for every matter. It is peace until the break of dawn.” 2.

How magnificent a night it is! How immense its goodness and how abundant its blessing! A single night is better than a thousand months—that is, more than eighty-three years, the lifetime of a man granted long life. Even if a Muslim spent that entire long life in obedience to Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, the Night of Decree—though only one night—would still be better than it. This applies to whoever attains its merit and receives its blessing.

Mujāhid, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months in which there is no Night of Decree.” Qatāda, al-Shāfi‘i, and others likewise said this.

On this blessed night, the angels descend in great numbers because of its abundant blessing, for the angels descend when blessings descend. It is peace until the break of dawn; that is, it is entirely good, with no evil in it until dawn. On this night every matter of wisdom is ordained, meaning that what will occur during that year is decreed by the permission of Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise. What is meant here is the annual decree. As for the comprehensive decree recorded in the Preserved Tablet, it preceded the creation of the heavens and the earth by fifty thousand years, as authentically reported in a hadith from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

A night of such distinction is one that the Muslim should seek with the utmost diligence,

(1) Surah al-Dukhān, verses 3–8. (2) Surah al-Qadr.
