164 / WHAT IS SAID DURING A SOLAR OR LUNAR ECLIPSE
The discussion here concerns solar and lunar eclipses and what it is recommended for a Muslim to say when one occurs.
Allah—Majestic is His Glory—has subjected various parts of creation to the son of Adam, honoring him and bestowing His favor upon him, so that he may obey Allah, affirm Allah’s oneness, and be grateful for His blessings. He—Majestic and Exalted—has subjected to humankind the heavens and the earth, night and day, and the sun and moon. His blessings upon humankind cannot be counted or numbered.
Allah Most High says: “It is Allah who has subjected the sea to you so that ships may sail upon it by His command, that you may seek His bounty, and that perhaps you may give thanks. He has also subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth—all from Him. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect.” 1.
He Most High also says: “Do you not see that Allah causes the night to merge into the day and the day to merge into the night, and that He has subjected the sun and moon, each running until an appointed term, and that Allah is fully aware of all that you do?” 2.
He Most High also says: “It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down water from the sky, thereby bringing forth fruits as provision for you. He subjected the ships to you so that they sail upon the sea by His command, and He subjected the rivers to you. He subjected the sun and moon to you, both moving ceaselessly, and He subjected the night and day to you. He has given you all that you asked of Him. Were you to count Allah’s blessings, you could never enumerate them. Indeed, man is truly unjust and utterly ungrateful.” 3.
