159 / WHAT SHOULD BE SAID IN THE PRESENCE OF SOMEONE NEAR DEATH
We have already discussed a number of the etiquettes pertaining to visiting the sick and the supplications that are appropriate on such a visit. The discussion here will concern what should be done and said in the presence of someone whose death is imminent, as well as what the dying person should say.
The most important thing is to supplicate for him and to say nothing but good in his presence. It is reported in Sahih Muslim that Umm Salama, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When you are in the presence of the sick or the deceased, say only what is good, for the angels say amen to what you say.”1
One should also take care to prompt him to say the declaration of monotheism, “There is no god but Allah,” so that these will be his final words in this world. Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Prompt those among you who are dying to say, ‘There is no god but Allah.’” Narrated by Muslim2. What is meant by “those among you who are dying” is those among you whose death is imminent, not those who have actually died.
Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever’s final words are, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ will enter Paradise.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd3.
Uthmān ibn Affān, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise.” Narrated by Muslim4.
