157 / Seeking Refuge from Sorcery, the Evil Eye, and Envy

Among the deadly afflictions and grave evils that may befall a person is illness caused by sorcery, the evil eye, or envy. Sorcery can have a profound effect upon the bewitched person: it may cause illness and may even kill. The same is true of the evil eye cast by an envious person when his soul becomes imbued with malice and evil gathers within his heart. It may harm the person he envies, sometimes causing illness and sometimes death. Thus, sorcery is real and has an effect, and envy is likewise real and has an effect.

Among Allah’s blessings upon His believing servant is that He has provided him with blessed means and beneficial measures by which the evil of such people may be warded off and the harm and affliction caused by them removed. The eminent scholar Ibn al-Qayyim—may Allah have mercy on him—summarized these in ten great means which, when the servant duly observes and applies them, will remove from him the evil of the envious person, the one who casts the evil eye, and the sorcerer.

The first means is to seek refuge in Allah from their evil, fortify oneself through Him, and turn to Him for protection, as the Most High says:

“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, from the evil of the darkness when it settles, from the evil of those who blow upon knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.”

Allah, Most High, hears whoever seeks refuge in Him, knows that from which refuge is sought, and has power over all things. Refuge is sought in Him alone; it is not sought in any of His creation, nor is anyone besides Him to be turned to for protection. Rather, it is He who grants refuge to those who seek it, safeguards them, and protects them from the evil against which they seek His protection.

The true meaning of seeking refuge is to flee from something you fear to one who will safeguard and protect you from it. No one can protect Allah’s servant or grant him refuge except Allah. Glorified is He: He is sufficient for whoever places his trust in Him and fully suffices whoever turns to Him. He grants safety to the fearful and sanctuary to those who seek it. Excellent is He as Protector, and excellent is He as Helper.
