He also narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—who said that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “The believer’s soul remains suspended as long as he has an outstanding debt.”1.
Therefore, if a Muslim is in debt, he must hasten to repay it before death takes him by surprise, lest his soul be detained on account of his debt and remain bound by it. If he has no debt, let him praise Allah for his well-being and avoid borrowing unless there is a compelling need or pressing necessity. He will thereby be spared the anxiety of debt, relieved of its consequences, and kept safe from its harmful outcome.
It is related in al-Musnad from ‘Uqba ibn ‘Āmir that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Do not frighten yourselves after having been secure.” They asked, “What do you mean, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Debt.”2.
That is, do not rush into debt and thereby subject yourselves to fear of its repercussions and consequences. We ask Allah to grant us and you well-being, safety, and guidance to all that is good.
