153 / What to Say When Calamity Strikes

The discussion here concerns what a Muslim is prescribed to say when a calamity befalls him in himself, his child, his wealth, or the like. He should first know that Allah’s established way with His servants is to test them in this worldly life with every manner of affliction and every form of trial and calamity. At times He tests them with poverty and at other times with wealth; at times with health and at other times with illness; sometimes with prosperity and sometimes with adversity. There is no one who is not tested—whether by missing something beloved, encountering something disliked, or losing something desired.

The joys of this world are but a sleeper’s dreams or a passing shadow. If it makes one laugh a little, it makes one weep much; if it brings happiness for a day, it brings sorrow for an age; and if it grants enjoyment briefly, it withholds for long. It never fills a home with delight without filling it with tears. As Ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “For every joy there is sorrow, and no house is filled with happiness without being filled with grief.” Yet Allah’s Muslim servant is destined for good in every circumstance, as the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “How wonderful is the affair of the believer! His entire affair is good, and this is true of no one but the believer. If prosperity comes to him, he gives thanks, and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he remains patient, and that is good for him.” Related by Muslim1.

Allah has guided His servants to the state in which they should remain when calamity strikes and to the remembrance that the afflicted person should recite. Allah Most High says:

“We will certainly test you with a measure of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. Give glad tidings to those who are patient—those who, when calamity befalls them, say, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.’ They are the ones upon whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and it is they who are rightly guided.” 2.
