150 / Remembrances for Times of Distress
Numerous hadiths are authentically established in the Sunnah from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—concerning the treatment of distress that may afflict a person. Distress is the hardship and pain one may experience within oneself because of calamities and adversities that strike a person, causing anguish, sorrow, and sleeplessness.
Among the hadiths concerning its treatment is the report narrated by al-Bukhārī and Muslim from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both: “When the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—was in distress, he would say: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. Abū Dāwūd narrated in his Sunan from Abū Bakrah—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “The supplication of one in distress is: ‘O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for.
