his wealth. Rather, what benefits him is his obedience to You, his faith in You, and his compliance with Your command.

His words, “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, devoting our worship sincerely to Him, even though the disbelievers detest it,” mean: We remain committed to this affirmation of Allah’s oneness and this sincerity, even though the disbelievers detest it.

The Muslim then proceeds to the transmitted formulas of glorification that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say after the prayers.

Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever glorifies Allah thirty-three times after every prayer, praises Allah thirty-three times, and magnifies Allah thirty-three times—making ninety-nine—and completes the hundred by saying, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has power over all things,’ will have his sins forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea.”1

He also reported, may Allah be pleased with him: “The poor came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘The wealthy have carried off the highest ranks and everlasting bliss. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they possess surplus wealth with which they perform Hajj and ‘umrah, strive in Allah’s cause, and give charity.’ He said, ‘Shall I not tell you of something which, if you adopt it, will enable you to catch up with those who have gone ahead of you, while no one coming after you will catch up with you, and you will be the best among those in whose midst you live—except for someone who does the same? Glorify Allah, praise Him, and magnify Him thirty-three times after every prayer.’”2

Abū Sālih, who narrated the hadith from Abū Hurayrah, said: “One says, ‘Glory be to Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest,’ until, taken together, they amount to thirty-three.” This, however, was his understanding of the hadith. The more evident meaning is that the stated count applies separately to each of these phrases: one glorifies Allah
