Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

His majesty—with the heart, the body, and speech. Hence the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “As for bowing, magnify the Lord therein.”1. Here end his words, may Allah have mercy on him.

As for prostration, it is a state of nearness to Allah, submission to Him, humility before Him, and humble contrition before Him—Glorious is He. A Muslim is therefore prescribed to supplicate abundantly while prostrating, for supplication in this posture is more likely to be answered. It is authentically reported in Sahih Muslim from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so supplicate often.” In the preceding hadith, he (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “As for prostration, strive earnestly in supplication, for your supplications are likely to be answered.” That is, it is highly likely and fitting that your supplications will be answered, for the closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, and his best state is that in which he is nearest to Allah. Hence, supplication in this posture is more likely to be answered.

Among the supplications transmitted from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for prostration is that which Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “One night, I noticed that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was missing from the bed. I felt around for him, and my hand came upon the soles of his feet while he was in the mosque. Both feet were upright, and he was saying: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and in Your pardon from Your punishment. I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot fully enumerate Your praise; You are as You have praised Yourself.’”2.

This momentous hadith shows that there is no escape except to Allah and no refuge from Him except with Him. The reins of all affairs are in His hand, and the forelocks of His servants are held fast by His decree and predestination. All command belongs to Him, all praise belongs to Him, all dominion belongs to Him, and all good is in His hands. Thus, from Him—Exalted is He—
