seeking refuge in Allah, holding fast to Him, relying upon Him, and entrusting every affair to Him. Whoever does so will enjoy Allah’s protection, aid, enablement, and guidance to what is right.
His words, “It is then said,” and, in another narration, “It is said to him, ‘You have been guided, sufficed, and protected,’” may mean that the speaker is Allah, or that it is one of the angels.
His words, “You have been guided,” mean: guided to the path of truth and right conduct because you sought Allah’s aid in pursuing what you had set out to do. Whoever Allah guides, none can lead astray.
His words, “and sufficed,” mean: you have been spared every worldly or otherworldly concern.
His words, “and protected,” mean: you have been guarded against the evil of your enemies, whether devils or others.
His words, “Then the devil withdraws from him,” mean that the devil moves away from him, for the devil has no way against one in such a state. He has entered an impregnable fortress and a secure refuge wherein he is protected from the accursed devil.
His words, “Then another devil says, ‘How can you get at a man who has been guided, sufficed, and protected?’” mean that one of the devils says to the devil who had intended to mislead and harm this person: How can you find a way to mislead and harm a man who has attained these qualities—guidance, sufficiency, and protection?
