132 / REMEMBRANCES FOR LEAVING THE HOME

The sunnah of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) contains blessed remembrances and beneficial supplications for a Muslim to recite when leaving his home. If he recites them, he will, by Allah’s permission, be protected, his concerns will be taken care of, he will be safeguarded from evils and afflictions, and he will be guided to the path of truth and right conduct. Al-Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd, and others narrated from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “When a man leaves his house and says, ‘In the name of Allah. I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except through Allah,’ it is said at that moment, ‘You have been guided, sufficed, and protected.’ Satan then withdraws from him, and another devil says, ‘What can you do to a man who has been guided, sufficed, and protected?’”1.

It is beneficial for a Muslim to recite this blessed remembrance every time he leaves his home to attend to any of his religious or worldly interests. In this way, he will be protected as he goes about, assisted in attending to his affairs, and directed aright in his destination and purpose. The servant cannot do without his Lord for even the blink of an eye: he needs Him as his Protector, Supporter, Guide, and the One who directs him aright. The servant can attain this only by turning to Allah, Glorious and Exalted, to seek and obtain it. The Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) therefore instructed anyone leaving his home to recite this blessed remembrance so that he may be guided on his way, his concerns and needs may be taken care of, and he may be protected from evils and afflictions.

His words, “When a man leaves his house,” mean: at the time he leaves his house. A dwelling from which a traveler sets out is treated in the same way as one’s house.

His words, “In the name of Allah,” mean: “In the name of Allah I depart,” for everyone performing an action supplies an implied verb appropriate
