Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

and the Sunnah. The methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah—which is the true methodology that every Muslim should follow regarding these attributes—is to affirm them for Allah just as He, glorified be He, affirmed them for Himself and as His Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—affirmed them for Him, without subjecting any of them to distortion or denial, seeking to define their modality, or likening them to creation. They believe that the Almighty Lord becomes angry; they seek refuge in Him, glorified be He, from His wrath and from everything that angers Him; and they strive against themselves to keep away from everything that angers Him, glorified be He, and incurs His punishment.

Among the things that anger the Lord and incur His punishment is for a servant, in times of adversity and when overcome by fear and panic, to seek refuge in anyone other than Him, glorified be He. How could it be fitting for a weak servant to seek refuge in another servant as weak as himself? How could a created being seek refuge in another created being like himself while forsaking the Lord of the worlds and Creator of all creation? Here we perceive the shallowness of mind and the foolishness of thought of those who, in times of adversity and panic, turn to soothsayers, fortune-tellers, impostors, charlatans, sorcerers, astrologers, and other brethren of the devils. They complain to them of their plight, lay their needs at their doors, and ask them to deliver them from distress and save them from terror—along with other things that must be sought from Allah alone and for which refuge must be taken in Him alone: “Who responds to the distressed when he calls upon Him, removes evil, and makes you successors upon the earth? Is there any deity alongside Allah? Little do you take heed.” 1

Does anyone besides Allah alone answer the distressed person who has been troubled by afflictions, whose desired end has become difficult to attain, and who has been driven by necessity to seek deliverance from his plight? Does anyone besides Allah alone remove the harm that afflicts and befalls a person? Yet people seldom remember this matter and reflect upon it only feebly. Otherwise, they would not turn to anyone other than Allah or seek refuge in anyone besides Him.

(1) Surat al-Naml, verse 62.
