Some scholars have stated that whoever remembers Allah Most High before going to sleep and recites the prescribed remembrances and transmitted supplications for protection is not subject to what is described in these hadiths and is spared these knots. This is because some of the remembrances before sleep explicitly state that whoever recites them will continue to have a guardian from Allah over him, and no devil will approach him until morning.1
Furthermore, if a person continues sleeping and persists in his laziness until he misses the dawn prayer, Satan urinates in his ear, as the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—informed us. The two Sahīh collections relate from Ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—that he said: A man who had slept until morning was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—whereupon he said: “That is a man in whose ears Satan has urinated—or he said: in his ear.” He therefore awakens with all the knots still as they were; in addition to that, Satan has urinated in his ear. For anyone in such a state, this is failure, loss, and evil enough. It is also reported that Ibn Masūd—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “It is failure and evil enough for a man to sleep until morning after Satan has urinated in his ear, without his having remembered Allah throughout the night before morning came.”2 We ask Allah for well-being and safety.
