128 / REMEMBRANCES UPON WAKING FROM SLEEP

Various remembrances have been authentically reported from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—which a Muslim is prescribed to say upon waking from sleep. Broadly speaking, they contain a declaration of Allah’s oneness, seeking refuge from the accursed Satan, and praising Allah—Glorified is He—for preserving His servant and helping him to obey and remember Him.

Among these reports is the hadith narrated by Al-Bukhārī in his Sahīh from Ubādah ibn al-Sāmit—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Whoever awakens during the night and says: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. All dominion and praise belong to Him, and He has power over all things. All praise is due to Allah; glory be to Allah; there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah; Allah is the Greatest; and there is no might or power except through Allah,’ then says, ‘O Allah, forgive me,’ or makes another supplication, he will be answered. If he performs ablution, his prayer will be accepted.” 1.

This hadith demonstrates the virtue of hastening to remember Allah—Almighty and Majestic—and praise Him upon waking from sleep, and of making this the first thing a believer does when he awakens. This is attained only by someone who has grown accustomed to remembrance, made it a regular practice, found comfort in it, and become so thoroughly absorbed in it that it is his mind’s constant refrain, asleep and awake. When this is his state, the first thing he does upon rising from sleep is hasten to remember, glorify, and praise his Lord—Glorified is He—and extol Him as He deserves. Anyone in such a state may well, by Allah’s permission, be granted what he asks and have his supplication answered.

Ibn Battāl—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “Allah has promised, through His Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—that whoever awakens from sleep with his tongue ardently proclaiming his Lord’s oneness, submitting to His sovereignty, and acknowledging His blessings,
