One of the blessed supplications that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would regularly recite when retiring to bed is that narrated by Muslim in his Sahīh from Anas ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him: Whenever the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—retired to bed, he would say: “Praise be to Allah, who has fed us, given us drink, sufficed us, and sheltered us. How many people have no one to suffice them or shelter them!”1
This supplication prompts the Muslim, when he wishes to sleep, to remember his bygone days and times past, and how Allah provided him during them with food, drink, sufficiency, and shelter, while many people can find neither food to satisfy and nourish them, nor drink to quench their thirst, nor clothing to cover and conceal them, nor a dwelling in which to take refuge and find shelter. Indeed, some have met their deaths amid devastating famines and grievous droughts. Anyone whom Allah has honored with food and drink, and upon whom He has bestowed sufficiency and shelter, should be keenly conscious of the greatness of Allah’s blessing upon him and the magnitude of His favor—Glorified is He—in making food and drink readily available to him and honoring him with sufficiency and shelter.

Hence it has been said: “Whenever you do not see your condition improving, turn to gratitude”; that is, when you embrace gratitude, increase will be your constant companion.
His words, “Praise be to Allah, who has fed us, given us drink…” to the end, contain praise and glorification of Allah—Majestic and Exalted is He—for His abundant blessings, the unceasing succession of His grace and generosity, and the abundance of
