His words in this supplication, “and Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion,” constitute an appeal to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, by His revelation of these magnificent Books, which contain guidance for people and the means to their success and happiness in this world and the Hereafter. He singled out these three Books because they are the greatest Books Allah revealed, and mentioned them in chronological order: first, the Torah, which was revealed to Moses—peace be upon him; then the Gospel, which was revealed to Jesus—peace be upon him; and then the Criterion—that is, the Noble Quran—which was revealed to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
This indicates that these Books are part of Allah’s speech, that they were sent down from Him—Glorious is He—and that they are uncreated. Hence, the supplication distinguishes between them: in reference to created things, it says “Lord” and “Splitter,” whereas in reference to His speech and revelation, it says “Revealer.” This is a refutation of the people of religious innovation and false desires who claim that Allah’s speech is created. Exalted is Allah above what they say, and glorified is He above what they ascribe to Him.
After mentioning these magnificent means of drawing near to Allah, he then said: “I seek refuge in You from the evil of every creature whose forelock You hold.” Here begins the mention of a person’s plea, need, and request from his Lord—Glorious is He. His words, “I seek refuge in You,” mean: I seek shelter in You, hold fast to You, and seek protection with You “from the evil of every creature whose forelock You hold.” A creature here means anything that moves upon the earth, including whatever crawls on its belly, walks on two legs, or walks on four. Allah Most High says: “Allah created every creature from water: some crawl on their bellies, some walk on two legs, and some walk on four. Allah creates whatever He wills. Indeed, Allah has power over all things.” 1.
