Talib—may Allah be pleased with him—that he said: “I do not think that any person of sound mind whom Islam has reached should sleep before reciting the Throne Verse and the closing verses of Surat al-Baqarah, for they are from a treasure beneath the Throne.”1
The words of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—“for they are from a treasure beneath the Throne” have been authentically established in more than one hadith traced back to him. Among them is the report narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad from Abū Dharr—may Allah be pleased with him—who said that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “I was given the closing verses of Surat al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne.”2
The Musnad also reports from Uqbah ibn Āmir al-Juhanī—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Recite the two verses at the end of Surat al-Baqarah, for I was given them from beneath the Throne.”3
Another report concerning the virtue of these two verses was narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahīh from Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—who said: “While Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—he heard a creaking sound above him. He raised his head and said, ‘This is a gate that was opened today and had never before been opened.’ An angel then descended through it, and Gabriel said, ‘This is an angel who has descended to earth and had never descended before today.’ The angel offered greetings and said, ‘Rejoice in two lights bestowed upon you that were not bestowed upon any prophet before you: the Opening of the Book and the closing verses of Surat al-Baqarah. You will not recite even one letter from either of them without being granted it.’”4
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “Know that Allah—glorified is He—granted His Prophet Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—the closing verses of Surat al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne, from which no prophet before him had been given anything. Whoever reflects upon these verses and understands what they contain of
