Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

attain and perfect these three objectives, pursuing them by the most direct means and along the finest path.

How excellent, then, it is to begin the day by remembering these three matters, which define a Muslim’s objectives for the day and establish his aims and purposes.

By reciting this supplication at the beginning of his day, a Muslim does not merely seek to define his objectives. Rather, he humbly implores his Lord and takes refuge with his Master and Protector, asking Him to graciously enable him to attain these great purposes and noble objectives. For he possesses neither power nor might and has no ability to secure benefit or ward off harm except by the permission of his Lord, Glorified is He. Thus, he turns to Him for refuge, seeks His help, and places his trust and reliance upon Him.

A Muslim’s words every morning, “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, wholesome provision, and deeds that are accepted,” are thus an appeal for help made to his Lord, Glorified is He, in the morning and at the outset of his day, asking Him to make difficulties easy, smooth away obstacles, and assist him in achieving his blessed and praiseworthy aims.

Consider how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began this supplication by asking Allah for beneficial knowledge before asking Him for wholesome provision and accepted deeds. This indicates that beneficial knowledge takes precedence and must come first. Allah Most High says: “Know, then, that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and women” 1. Thus, He began with knowledge before speech and action.

Beginning with beneficial knowledge contains manifest wisdom that will not escape anyone who reflects: through beneficial knowledge, a person can distinguish righteous deeds from unrighteous ones and wholesome provision from that which is not wholesome. A person without knowledge may become confused and perform a deed believing it to be righteous and beneficial when it is not. Allah Most High says: “Say: Shall We tell you who are the greatest losers in respect of their deeds? Those whose efforts have gone astray in the life of this world

(1) Surah Muhammad, verse 19.
