the danger of an affliction that befalls a person from beneath him, such as the earth swallowing him from below. This is one form of punishment that Allah, Glorious and Exalted, brings upon some who walk the earth without obeying its Creator and Originator. Instead, they walk upon it in sin, aggression, evil, and disobedience. They are therefore punished when it quakes beneath them or swallows them up, as recompense for their sins and punishment for their disobedience. Allah Most High says:

“We seized each of them for their sin: against some We sent a storm of stones; some were overtaken by the Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow; and some We drowned. It was not Allah who wronged them, but they wronged themselves.”1.

Among the tremendous forms of remembrance that a Muslim should observe every morning and evening is that which is authentically reported in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says ten times in the morning, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has power over all things,’ Allah will record one hundred good deeds for him, erase one hundred sins from him, and grant him a reward equivalent to freeing a slave. Through these words, he will be protected that day until evening. Whoever says the same in the evening will receive the same reward.”2.

Among the tremendous forms of remembrance that a Muslim is prescribed to say one hundred times every morning3 is that which is authentically reported in the two Sahih collections from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him), who said: “Whoever says, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He is

(1) Surah al-Ankabūt, verse 40. (2) Al-Musnad, 2/360. Al-Albānī (may Allah have mercy on him) graded it authentic in al-Sahīha, 6/1/136–137. (3) This remembrance is not restricted to the morning, although reciting it in the morning is preferable because this means hastening to do good, earning its reward from the very beginning of the day, and gaining protection from Satan from the start of the day. For this reason, scholars included it among the morning remembrances.
