Despite all this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) frequently sought forgiveness at all times, and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would count the many times he sought forgiveness during his gatherings.
Muslim narrated in his Sahīh from al-Agharr al-Muzanī (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A veil does indeed come over my heart, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness one hundred times a day.”1
Al-Bukhārī narrated in his Sahīh from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “By Allah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.”2
Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), who said: “In a single gathering, we would count the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying one hundred times: ‘My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.’”3
Al-Nasā’ī narrated from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered the people and said: ‘O people, repent to Allah, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day.’”4
