Furthermore, sins cause a servant to become lowly in the sight of his Lord. When a servant becomes lowly in Allah’s sight, no one can honor him, as Allah Most High says: “Whoever Allah humiliates has no one to honor him.” 1 The most honored of His creation before Allah are those who fear Him most, and those nearest to Him in rank are those most obedient to Him. A servant’s standing before Him is commensurate with his obedience. When he disobeys Him, he becomes lowly in His sight, and this brings about estrangement between the servant and his Master. Once that estrangement occurs, every means to good is cut off from the servant, while every means to evil becomes attached to him. What success, what hope, and what life can there be for one from whom the means to all good have been cut off and whose bond with his Protector and Master—whom he cannot do without for even the blink of an eye, or less—has been severed?

Furthermore, sins cause Allah to disregard His servant, abandon him, and leave him to himself and his devil. Therein lies ruin from which no deliverance can be hoped for. Allah Most High says: “O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul consider what it has sent forth for tomorrow. And fear Allah; surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do. Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He caused them to forget themselves. It is they who are the defiantly disobedient.” 2 Thus He, Glorified is He, commanded them to fear Him and forbade His believing servants to resemble those who forgot Him by abandoning fear of Him. He informed them that He punished those who abandoned fear of Him by causing them to forget themselves—that is, to forget what serves their own welfare and what would save them from His punishment. You therefore see the sinner neglecting and squandering his own welfare, while the interests of his religion and worldly life slip from his grasp. Indeed, his affairs become difficult for him: whenever he sets out to do something, he finds the way barred or the matter difficult. This is just as Allah makes matters easy for one who fears Him,

(1) Surah al-Hajj, verse 18. (2) Surah al-Hashr, verses 18–19.
