Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

There is no harm, however—indeed, it is commendable—to pray that Allah guide them and enable them to accept the truth. It is recorded in the Sahīh that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “O Allah, guide Daws and bring them.”1

Muslim narrated in his Sahīh from Yazīd ibn Abd al-Rahmān, who said: Abū Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—told me:

“I used to invite my mother to Islam while she was still a polytheist. One day, when I invited her, she said something about the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that I detested. I went to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—weeping and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have been inviting my mother to Islam, but she refuses to listen to me. Today I invited her again, and she said something about you that I detested. So pray to Allah to guide the mother of Abū Hurayrah.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘O Allah, guide the mother of Abū Hurayrah.’

“I left, rejoicing at the supplication of Allah’s Prophet. When I reached the door, I found it closed. My mother heard the faint sound of my footsteps and said, ‘Stay where you are, Abū Hurayrah.’ I heard the splashing of water. She bathed, put on her shift, and, in her haste, left off her head covering. She then opened the door and said, ‘Abū Hurayrah, I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.’

“I returned to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—weeping for joy. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, rejoice! Allah has answered your supplication and guided the mother of Abū Hurayrah.’ He praised and extolled Allah and spoke words of goodness. I then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, pray that Allah cause His believing servants to love my mother and me, and cause us to love them.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘O Allah, cause Your believing servants to love this servant of Yours—meaning Abū Hurayrah—and his mother.’ Thereafter, no believer who heard of me or saw me failed to love me.”2
