Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—thus forbade cursing this particular man, who frequently drank wine, explaining that he loved Allah and His Messenger, even though he—peace and blessings be upon him—pronounced a general curse upon those who drink wine. This indicates that it is permissible to pronounce a curse in general terms, but not to curse a particular individual who loves Allah and His Messenger.1 In any event, a curse is a threat of punishment, and such a threat does not necessarily apply to a particular individual unless its conditions are fulfilled and its impediments are absent. Allah knows best.

1. *Minhāj al-Sunnah* (4/567–574).
