before it, when it is recited to them, fall upon their faces in prostration and say, ‘Glory be to our Lord! Surely our Lord’s promise must be fulfilled.’ And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humble submission.” 1 Allah Most High also said: “When they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they have recognized.” 2
It is this listening that Allah Most High commanded His servants to practice, as He said: “When the Quran is recited, listen attentively to it and remain silent, so that you may receive mercy.” 3 He praised those who engage in it, as in His saying: “So give glad tidings to My servants who listen to the word and follow the best of it.” 4 In another verse, He said: “Have they not pondered the word, or has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?” 5 Thus, the word they were commanded to ponder is the word they were commanded to listen to. Allah Most High also said: “Do they not ponder the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” 6 And He said: “This is a blessed Book that We have sent down to you, so that they may ponder its verses.” 7
Just as Allah praised this listening, He condemned those who turn away from it, saying: “When Our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly, as though he had not heard them, as though there were deafness in his ears.” 8,
