Fiqh al-Adiyah wa-al-AdhkarAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

Nor is it permissible for a Muslim deliberately to adopt particular melodies in his supplication or affected modes of delivery—such as lowering and raising the voice, singing melodiously, vocal modulation, or the like. Some people in our time call these “devotional invocations” and give them a particular style of delivery resembling song. Such a practice is impermissible, for supplication is an occasion for asking, expressing one’s need, and humbly entreating Allah—not for singing. It is an occasion for submission and worship, not for displaying melodic artistry. It is an occasion for humility, submission, and faith, not for preoccupying the mind with embellishing the delivery and maintaining rhythmic patterns. Allah alone guides and grants success, and His help alone is sought.
