that doing so is among the causes of supplications being answered, rain descending, goodness abounding, and blessings spreading through one’s wealth and children. Allah, Exalted is He, relates that Noah (peace be upon him) said to his people: “I said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving. He will send down abundant rain upon you from the sky, support you with wealth and sons, and provide you with gardens and rivers.’” 1

He likewise relates that Hūd (peace be upon him) said to his people: “O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord, then repent to Him. He will send down abundant rain upon you from the sky and add strength to your strength. Do not turn away as evildoers.” 2

Allah, Exalted is He, also says: “Had the people of those towns believed and been mindful of Allah, We would surely have opened up for them blessings from heaven and earth.” 3

He also says: “We certainly sent messengers to nations before you, then afflicted them with adversity and hardship so that they might humble themselves. If only they had humbled themselves when Our affliction came upon them! Instead, their hearts hardened, and Satan made their deeds seem appealing to them.” 4

And He says: “Ask forgiveness of your Lord, then repent to Him, and He will grant you good enjoyment.” 5

Thus, repenting to Allah and asking His forgiveness are causes for goodness to descend, blessings to follow one after another, and supplications to be answered. It is related that the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him), went out to pray for rain but did nothing more than seek forgiveness until he returned. Rain then fell, and the people said, “We did not see you ask for rain.” He replied, “I sought rain through the rain-bringing means of heaven, by which rain is brought down.” Then he recited: “I said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving,
